Matt Black travelled nearly 160,000 kilometres across the United States from 2013, photographing communities living with poverty at the edges of the country's promised prosperity. His dense black-and-white images move through small towns, fields and peripheral streets. The series makes geography inseparable from inequality: the distances between places reveal common conditions rather than isolated local failures. This book brings the long journey into a tightly composed account of contemporary America.
