Shōji Ueda

Shōji Ueda (1913–2000) was a Japanese photographer known for carefully staged images made around the Tottori Sand Dunes, near his native Sakaiminato. From the 1930s onward, he arranged family, friends and objects within sparse landscapes, combining surrealism, modernist composition and playful theatricality. Darwin selects Ueda for a singular alternative to documentary photography: precise constructions where landscape becomes a stage and ordinary figures acquire an enigmatic, almost graphic presence.

After Shōji Ueda's death, his family found negatives of his wife Kie made between the mid-1930s and the 1950s. Boku no Album brings 69 of these previously unpublished photographs together. Kie was both his closest companion and a frequent subject, and the pictures move between domestic affection and the measured staging associated with Ueda's work.
