Bodies without faces, wooded landscapes and dim, ambiguous spaces form a fractured visual sequence in Zhang Yining’s Empty. Developed over more than two years, the project draws on the photographer’s experience of narcolepsy and the uncertain passage between sleep and waking. Figures merge with their surroundings while fragments of memory seem to surface and disappear. The black clothbound cover, inset monochrome image and dark interior pages reinforce the book’s restrained, disorienting atmosphere.
