Japon fin de siècle — Felice Beato & Raimund von Stillfried — Arthaud — 2000
Hand-coloured portraits, carefully arranged interiors and views of Japan bring together two important figures in nineteenth-century photographic representation: Felice Beato and Raimund von Stillfried. Their images offer records of people, dress and places while revealing how studio staging helped construct an image of Japan for viewers abroad. The relationship between observation and performance gives the photographs much of their interest today: a pose or a painted detail can speak as clearly as a landscape. Texts by Pierre Loti introduce another outsider’s perspective, while Chantal Edel provides the introduction. This French-language Arthaud volume returns to material originally published as Mukashi Mukashi in 1984, allowing the photographs and literary accounts to be read alongside one another.
