Mark Cohen took his camera through Mexico City, Mérida and Oaxaca on several trips between 1981 and 2003. He brought the abrupt proximity of his street photography to unfamiliar streets, catching fragments of bodies, gestures and encounters without trying to make a general portrait of the country. The images resist the distant viewpoint of a travel book. Mexico is most revealing in its collisions between Cohen's instinctive way of seeing and the places through which he moved.
