Shashin e no tabi / Photo Trip — Nobuyoshi Araki — Kōbunsha Bunko — 2007
Shashin e no tabi brings together Nobuyoshi Araki’s travels across Japan in the mid-1970s, when he met amateur photographers and shared his approach to making pictures through a series of practical photography encounters. The lessons become a personal journey: Japanese prose and photographs carry the reader through places, meetings and the impulses that shape his work. Chapters move from Kurashiki and Kobe to Biei, Sapporo and Hiroshima, while references to Diane Arbus and Eugène Atget open a dialogue with photography beyond Japan. Playful and irreverent, the book connects the practice of taking pictures with Araki’s own sentimental attachment to experience. This 2007 Kōbunsha Bunko edition re-edits the photo-essay first published by Asahi Sonorama in May 1976.
