Tokyo Modern Pictorial — Issei Suda — Zen Foto Gallery — 2020

Suda photographed Tokyo’s Kanda district, where he was born, beginning in 1979; the series was later published in Asahi Camera between 1982 and 1983 with texts by critic Masao Tanaka. Four decades later, these photographs became a book for the first time. Suda’s square-format street pictures make the neighbourhood feel suspended between eras, attentive to gestures, shopfronts, clothing and small visual collisions that turn an everyday Tokyo into something stranger and less fixed in time.
