Yuki Aoyama (青山裕企), born in Nagoya in 1978, is a Japanese photographer best known for Schoolgirl Complex and Solaryman. Since 2006, Schoolgirl Complex has examined the visual codes of Japanese school uniforms through carefully framed photographs, while Solaryman depicts salarymen jumping against the sky. Darwin selects Aoyama for using two recognisable social figures—schoolgirls and office workers—to investigate uniform, gesture, desire, conformity and individuality in contemporary Japanese culture.
