After the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, Pierre-Elie de Pibrac travelled across Japan to meet people whose lives had changed. His naturally lit portraits, made with a large-format camera, give them room to present themselves rather than illustrate a disaster. Black-and-white urban sequences interrupt the encounters, while poetry and text bring the Japanese idea of impermanence into the book. The photographs hold individual experience against a wider landscape of loss and rebuilding.
