Han Youngsoo (1933–1999) was a South Korean photographer who documented Seoul during its rapid transformation after the Korean War. Returning from military service in 1955, he photographed streets, markets, children, workers and expanding neighbourhoods with formal precision and close attention to everyday life. Darwin selects Han for a remarkably modern record of postwar Korea, where reconstruction and Westernisation coexist with older social structures, creating an archive of a society changing visibly.
