Hand-Painted Dowry Chest, Rajasthan / Gujarat, ca. 1780–1850

Magnificent hand-painted wedding chest from North India, likely Rajasthan or Gujarat, crafted in solid teak and richly decorated in the late Mughal style.

Each panel narrates a chapter of the royal wedding procession: the groom riding a caparisoned elephant, musicians and nobles marching in bright attire, and courtly scenes of dancers performing inside palatial halls. The lid and borders are adorned with gold foliate arabesques, echoing the lavish murals and textile motifs of 18th-century Rajput courts.

Built from dense reclaimed teak and fitted with original forged-iron hardware, the chest remains in excellent condition with its pigments remarkably vivid. The work exemplifies the synthesis between Mughal refinement and Rajastani narrative art — ceremonial, devotional, and deeply symbolic of union and prosperity.
