Hideka Tonomura, born in Kobe in 1979, is a Japanese photographer whose work confronts love, sexuality and difficult forms of intimacy. Her debut photobook, Mama Love, photographs her own mother and her extramarital relationship; They Called Me Yukari emerged from Tonomura’s time working as a hostess in Kabukicho. Darwin selects her for photography that enters private, uncomfortable territory without separating autobiography, desire and lived experience.
