El Hoyo Maravilla — Janette Beckman — Dashwood Books — 2020

In East Los Angeles in 1983, Janette Beckman photographed members of the Mexican-American gang El Hoyo Maravilla with the close attention to pose, clothing and affiliation that also informs her work on music and street culture. Individuals present themselves to the camera within the shared spaces of their community, making gestures and dress part of the social account. The photographs encourage a reading beyond the gang label, giving room to the ways people choose to appear and to the bonds visible between them. First published as a book in 2011, the project was redesigned for this 2020 edition with previously unpublished photographs and an introduction by Miss Rosen. The edition comprises 750 copies.
