Storyville Portraits — E. J. Bellocq — The Museum of Modern Art — First Edition, Hard Cover, 1970
Women in New Orleans’ Storyville district pose in furnished rooms, clothed or nude, in photographs made around 1912. Bellocq’s surviving glass negatives reached a new audience through Lee Friedlander’s prints and the Museum of Modern Art’s 1970 exhibition and publication. Edited by John Szarkowski, the book pairs the portraits with Friedlander’s preface and recollections gathered from people familiar with Bellocq and his milieu.
