In 1935 a miner became a global icon of productivity. Seventy-four years later, this project returns to that myth at the moment of its collapse. Shot in eastern Ukraine in a mine bearing Stakhanov’s name, 100 portraits capture workers during shift change, faces blackened, gaze direct. As over 100,000 miners faced redundancy, the book confronts the erosion of industrial labour and the afterlife of Soviet heroism.
