Harsh flash, watchful faces and the spectacle of the street give Weegee’s photographs their unmistakable pressure. The New York press photographer approached public life as a succession of dramas in which the crowd and its reactions could matter as much as the event itself. This selection of eighty-five photographs, introduced by John Coplans, provides a concentrated encounter with that way of seeing. Its German title, Perpetrators and Victims, brings the unequal roles within a public scene to the foreground. Attention moves between people exposed to the camera and those looking on, making the act of watching part of the picture.
