Hélène Giannecchini enters Donna Gottschalk's archive while researching friendship and begins to trace the lives around her photographs. From the late 1960s through the 1980s, Gottschalk photographed siblings, lovers, activists and friends within queer communities in the United States. The pictures are close because she belonged to these circles; they record relationships as well as political struggle. Giannecchini's writing gives those images names, memory and context without turning private lives into anonymous symbols.
