Japan’s disappearing pink cinemas become the setting for a more hidden social world in Hideki Yamada’s 映画館 . Rather than concentrating on the films themselves, Yamada photographs people who gather in these increasingly scarce adult theatres for purposes beyond moviegoing, extending his earlier work around hattenba and marginal spaces of encounter. Published as COVID-19 further restricted these communities, the book turns an already vanishing environment into a record of intimacy, cruising and social life at the edge of public visibility.
