Where Love Is Illegal — Robin Hammond, Artist Edition, Éditions Bessard, 2022
A portrait becomes an act of defiance. Produced across 14 countries between 2014 and 2019, this Artist Edition brings together 80 large-format Polaroids and testimonies by people persecuted for their identity or sexuality. Concealment—through fabric, gesture or shadow—coexists with control, dignity and self-representation. The book’s hand-assembled construction, alternating 180gsm image pages with 80gsm text sheets one by one, makes it an extraordinarily complex object, unlikely to be produced this way again.
