A quiet confrontation with violence and accountability. David Goldblatt photographed former offenders at the exact locations of their crimes or arrests, pairing each portrait with the subject’s own written testimony. Made between South Africa and England, the work resists spectacle and asks direct questions about guilt, circumstance and consequence. Published by Steidl, this tritone volume extends Goldblatt’s lifelong examination of power, race and social structure into an unflinching study of responsibility.
