KIN is Pieter Hugo’s sustained engagement with South Africa: its fractured histories, racial and social tensions, family life and the uneasy relationship between personal identity and collective inheritance. Rather than compiling Hugo’s earlier projects, the book forms a distinct body of work made across South Africa, moving between portraits, landscapes, domestic scenes and self-scrutiny. The result is one of his most personal books, with a text contribution by Ben Okri.
