Bertien van Manen (1935–2024) was a Dutch photographer known for long-term, intimate projects made across Europe, Russia, China and the United States. Using small cameras and often staying with the people she photographed, she developed an informal language of imperfect framing, flash and domestic proximity. Books including A Hundred Summers, A Hundred Winters and East Wind became landmarks. Darwin selects Van Manen for documentary photography built through immersion rather than distance.
