Jeanne Taris works from sustained proximity to the Gitan community of Saint-Jacques in Perpignan. Homes, meals, prayer, childhood, adolescence and preparations for marriage appear through the trust produced by repeated presence rather than detached observation. The photographs refuse spectacle even when circumstances are difficult: individual faces remain central, carrying both vulnerability and an emphatic sense of life. Published with a text by Swan Agu, the book gives this long-term work a tall, narrow sequence of colour photographs.
