Woman in the Mirror — Richard Avedon — Harry N. Abrams — 2005
Five decades of Avedon’s photographs of women are brought into a single, deliberately expansive sequence, moving between fashion, performance, celebrity and portraiture. Marilyn Monroe, Dovima and Suzy Parker appear alongside artists and less publicly known sitters, revealing how consistently Avedon used gesture, posture and the controlled studio encounter to complicate ideas of beauty and presence. Completed among his final book projects, the volume is accompanied by Anne Hollander’s essay on women, dress and representation.
