Hashimoto’s earliest photographs of his hometown trace Ishinomaki from 1955 to 1969, moving from the late postwar years into Japan’s period of rapid economic growth. Made while he was still a teenager and young photographer, the pictures already show his close attention to street life, work and ordinary encounters. Published decades later, the book gives these formative images a concentrated sequence and places the port city at the beginning of a photographic relationship Hashimoto would return to throughout his life.
