Yamagata photographs Tamagawa Onsen in Akita, a remote geothermal valley visited by cancer patients seeking alternative treatment. The prone bodies scattered across the landscape reminded him of Buddhist images of the Nirvana and its ten disciples, connecting the work to his father’s cancer diagnosis and the birth of his son. This expanded 2016 second edition gives the series a fuller form than the small 2015 first edition, with 108 pages in hardcover.
