Sickily — Adriano Mercurio — 89books

Adriano Mercurio’s Sickily uses a deliberately distorted version of “Sicily” to frame an uneasy relationship with the island. Rather than producing a celebratory portrait, the photographs move through streets, people and landscape with an eye for contradiction, stagnation and everyday vitality. Published by 89books, the book belongs to a contemporary Sicilian tradition in which attachment and criticism coexist. Palermo and the wider island appear as lived environments, resistant to both tourist imagery and simple social diagnosis.
