Downtown Misery — Miron Zownir — 89books

Made during a 2023 journey of more than 7,000 kilometres across Canada, Downtown Misery follows Miron Zownir from Montreal to Vancouver via Lethbridge and Winnipeg. The photographs concentrate on urban social emergencies: the fentanyl crisis in Vancouver, precarious Indigenous communities in Winnipeg, addiction, homelessness and structural neglect. Zownir’s black-and-white approach is characteristically direct, but the book is geographically specific rather than a generalized study of marginality.
