Tokio — Jacob Aue Sobol — Lunwerg — 2008
Jacob Aue Sobol arrived in Tokyo in spring 2006 and struggled to find a place within its crowded streets and quiet commuter trains. Carrying a pocket camera, he began approaching people and looking for encounters that could break through his sense of isolation. Tokio follows that search through close portraits, private interiors and fragments of daily life. Dense blacks, visible grain and tightly cropped bodies give the images a physical immediacy: the city emerges through skin, gestures and the vulnerability of being near another person. The sequence turns a stranger’s uncertainty into an intimate account of connection. This Spanish-language Lunwerg edition presents the project that won the 2008 Leica European Publishers Award for Photography, published internationally under the title I, Tokyo.
