MALANGAN — Diego Zapatero — Self-published — 2025

Built through three years of research across twelve Wayang Topeng communities in East Java, Malangan treats the photobook as both ethnographic record and physical archive. Zapatero travelled more than 2,000 kilometres through the Malang region, photographing performers, masks and custodians of a tradition connected to the Panji cycle. Black-and-white photographs are individually mounted among drawings, maps, texts and translucent sheets; each handmade copy is also scented with a fragrance used in Javanese ritual, extending the work beyond the photographic image.
