Francesc Català-Roca (1922–1998) was a Catalan photographer and filmmaker whose images documented Spain’s transformation under Franco. Working extensively in Barcelona and Madrid, he photographed streets, architecture, workers and everyday life with precise compositions and striking contrasts. His books include Barcelona and Madrid. Darwin selects Català-Roca for combining modernist visual discipline with documentary observation, creating an enduring record of urban change, social inequality and postwar Spanish culture.
