Shinjuku yo! / Jam Session — Nobuyoshi Araki & Yasunori Okadome — Seihōsha — 1984

Shinjuku yo! brings together Nobuyoshi Araki’s monochrome photographs and the writing of Yasunori Okadome, editor of the Japanese magazine Uwasa no Shinsō. Published in 1984, their collaboration takes Tokyo’s Shinjuku district as its subject, pairing photographic observation with an account of the neighbourhood at that time. The subtitle Jam Session suggests the book’s structure: two distinct voices working alongside one another, with prose and images contributing different rhythms to a shared urban portrait. Its compact, text-led format offers another route into Araki’s work, placing his photographs within the contemporary publishing culture and social life of 1980s Tokyo. This is the Japanese-language Seihōsha edition.
