Provoke was not a magazine—it was a rupture. First published in Japan between 1968 and 1969, the three issues of Provoke fundamentally rewired photographic language, introducing the radical are-bure-boke aesthetic: grainy, blurry, out-of-focus images charged with political urgency and poetic instability. Created by critic Koji Taki, photographers Takuma Nakahira, Yutaka Takanashi, and Daido Moriyama (from issue 2), and poet Takahiko Okada, Provoke became an underground manifesto for postwar visual resistance.

This faithful reprint by Nitesha restores all three original volumes in facsimile, replicating their paper stock, size, layout, and sequence. Also included is a fourth companion booklet containing complete English and Chinese translations of all the original essays and poems, making this the most accessible edition of Provoke ever released.

The original issues are now nearly impossible to obtain. This reprint brings one of the most essential and mythologised photographic projects back into circulation—where it belongs. Filed in the Darwin archive as a cornerstone: a work that dissolved the boundaries between language and image, theory and instinct, body and film.
