Noticings (2019–2021) — Patrick Sansone — Sansonica Books — 2025

Noticings (2019–2021) is Patrick Sansone’s second photographic monograph, gathering pictures made between the winter of 2019 and the summer of 2021. Known as a musician with Wilco and The Autumn Defense, Sansone turns a patient eye towards the American South: weathered signs, closed shops, vacant lots and the ordinary structures through which a place reveals its history.

Made on 35mm and medium-format film, the photographs extend the analogue practice of his earlier book, 100 Polaroids. Long drives and solitary walks during the pandemic became opportunities to look closely at small towns and the remnants of mid-century America. Colour, light and carefully observed details give these apparently uneventful spaces a quiet intensity.

Human presence is often suggested through what people have left behind. A sign outlives its business; a building retains the shape of an activity that has disappeared. The work reflects on economic change and the passing of time while remaining attentive to the visual pleasure of an unexpected arrangement or a fleeting patch of light.

With affinities to William Eggleston’s colour photography, William Christenberry’s Southern landscapes and the attention to built environments associated with New Topographics, Sansone develops a personal account of looking. The book’s 136 colour photographs invite sustained attention to places that are easily passed by.
