    Vom Piktorialismus der späten Qing-Zeit über maoistische Propaganda und den individuellen Ausdruck der Reformära bis hin zu den globalisierten Experimenten der 2000er-Jahre entfaltet dieses Buch eine polyphone Erzählung Chinas anhand seiner gedruckten Erzeugnisse. Mehr als 250 Fotobücher werden reproduziert, viele davon erstmals außerhalb Chinas, und jedes wird in seinen spezifischen politischen und visuellen Kontext eingeordnet. Nüchterne Dokumentarfotografie, inszenierte Bilder, volkstümliche Alben – die Materialien prallen aufeinander, überschneiden sich und widersprechen einander; so werden die Spannungen und Brüche hinter dem staatlich abgesegneten Bild sichtbar.

    Diese von Aperture veröffentlichte und auf der wegweisenden Wanderausstellung basierende zweite Ausgabe (2016) ist heute ein unverzichtbares Nachschlagewerk für alle, die den Verflechtungen von Fotografie, Druckkultur und Macht nachgehen. Sie gehört neben The Latin American Photobook und Parrs früherem Werk The Photobook: A History zu einer bewussten Neufassung fotografischer Kanones aus der globalen Peripherie.
