Luhansk 1994–1998 — Alexander Chekmenev — 89books — 2024

Made in Luhansk during the first turbulent years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Alexander Chekmenev’s photographs register a city and its inhabitants before the wars that would later redefine the Donbas. Direct portraits and street observations hold together private character, post-Soviet hardship and the visual texture of the 1990s. Seen from the present, the work also functions as a record of a social landscape transformed by conflict, without reducing its subjects to the history that followed.
