Anthropology
Masks, rituals, garments and forms of self-presentation across Latin America, Africa, Oceania and Japan. This is not an academic survey, but a sequence of books in which tradition shifts into performance, fiction and myth. Recent photobooks sit alongside nineteenth- and twentieth-century ethnographic volumes whose colonial and racist assumptions remain visible. Rather than neutralising that history, Darwin keeps it legible: these images were often made through Western systems of classification, travel and power. They need to be read both for what they show and for the structures that shaped their making.
