Gas Stop — David Freund, Steidl 2016

An American vernacular epic in 720 pages. Between 1978 and 1981, David Freund photographed gas stations across forty-eight states, mapping a roadside architecture that shaped mobility, commerce, and identity. Pumps, signage, attendants, customers—each image observes how design and landscape merge into a distinctly national mythology. Published by Steidl in 2016 as a substantial hardcover in decorative slipcase, Gas Stop transforms a ubiquitous structure into a cultural document of scale and precision.
