Modern Color — Fred Herzog, Hatje Cantz , 2016
This landmark monograph captures the full chromatic force of Fred Herzog’s pioneering street photography—decades before colour became an accepted language in art photography. Working almost exclusively with Kodachrome from the 1950s onward, Herzog built a luminous record of working-class life in Vancouver: neon signage, pastel storefronts, beat-up cars, men in hats, women in curlers, shifting clouds and sharp light. His eye, always observant but never clinical, finds quiet drama and strange elegance in the everyday.
