THE AFRONAUTS — Cristina de Middel — This book Is true — 2024

De Middel reconstructs Zambia’s improbable 1964 space programme through staged photography, archival language and fiction, deliberately unsettling the conventions of documentary representation. Originally self-published in 2012, the project became a key photobook of its generation, receiving an ICP Infinity Award and recognition from Paris Photo–Aperture and Deutsche Börse. This fourth edition returns the work in a compact hardcover format, preserving the collision of historical fact, constructed imagery and speculative storytelling that defines the original project.
