Peter Berlin: Icon, Artist, Photosexual — Peter Berlin — Damiani — 2019
Peter Berlin’s self-portraits make clothing, gesture and sexual self-presentation part of a single photographic practice. In images associated with gay culture of the 1970s and 1980s, he appears as both the maker of the picture and the designer of the persona within it. His self-made clothes and carefully controlled appearance turn the body into an image intended to circulate, be recognised and be desired. Edited by Michael Bullock, the volume places that work alongside contributions by Jonathan D. Katz, Ted Stansfield, Evan Moffitt and Hans Ulrich Obrist. Their perspectives provide a wider context for understanding Berlin’s role in gay visual culture, while the photographs retain the directness of an artist who built his public identity through his own camera.
