Tokyo–Koza brings two of Keizo Kitajima’s early bodies of work into direct contact: photographs made in Okinawa between 1975 and 1979, and Tokyo’s underground nightlife in 1979. Bars, streets and fleeting encounters emerge through stark black-and-white images lit by an unforgiving flash. Kitajima photographs from within these environments, close enough for gestures and expressions to register with an unsettled immediacy.
