José Ortiz Echagüe (1886–1980) was a Spanish photographer, engineer and industrialist whose work documented traditional costumes, landscapes, villages and religious practices. His celebrated books include España, tipos y trajes and España mística. Using the Fresson carbon printing process, he produced richly textured images resembling engravings. Darwin selects Ortiz Echagüe for the tension between ethnographic documentation, pictorialist construction and an idealised vision of Spanish identity.
