PRESENCIO & THE RURAL KIDS — Virginia Villacisla — Cuadernos de la Kursala — 2025

Summer in rural Spain is anything but empty in Virginia Villacisla’s decade-long portrait of Presencio, the 200-person Burgos village where her mother was born. Young people raised between city and countryside return for fiestas, drinking, romance and the temporary freedoms of village life, occupying spaces inherited from earlier generations. Shot from within rather than as an outsider’s survey of depopulation, the work is intimate, unruly and often humorous—a record of youth held between family memory, rural exodus and an uncertain future.
