Tokyo–Koza brings two of Keizo Kitajima’s early bodies of work into direct contact: photographs made in Okinawa between 1975 and 1979, and Tokyo’s underground nightlife in 1979. Bars, streets and fleeting encounters emerge through stark black-and-white images lit by an unforgiving flash. Kitajima photographs from within these environments, close enough for gestures and expressions to register with an unsettled immediacy. Seen together, the series connect the social tensions of Okinawa after its return to Japanese administration with the restless energy of the capital. The oversized pages give these encounters a physical force, revealing the shared approach behind projects originally published separately.
