In the American West — Richard Avedon — Harry N. Abrams — 2005

Avedon’s monumental portrait of the American West strips away landscape and mythology, placing ranch workers, miners, drifters, bar girls and other sitters against an unforgiving white ground. Made over five years, the project replaces the heroic visual language of the West with frontal encounters shaped by scale, detail and physical presence. This twentieth-anniversary edition restores the landmark 1985 book, adding a foreword by John Rohrbach while retaining Avedon’s text and Laura Wilson’s project journal.
