Keizo Kitajima’s New York brings together two encounters with the city across the 1980s. Black-and-white photographs made in 1981 and 1982 lead into colour work from 1986, 1987 and 1989, allowing changes in the streets and their inhabitants to register within the sequence. Working from an apartment in the East Village, Kitajima devoted his days and nights to photographing the people around him. Faces, gestures and close encounters carry the book’s energy. Published with a new selection in 2024, it expands the scope of his 1982 photobook through 152 images and texts by Kitajima and Shino Kuraishi. The passage from monochrome to colour gives this record of urban life a second, later perspective.
