Cristina García Rodero (born 1949 in Puertollano) spent fifteen years documenting popular festivals, religious rituals and collective traditions across Spain, culminating in España oculta (1989). Her black-and-white photographs expose the tensions between devotion, spectacle, violence and desire. Darwin selects García Rodero for her uncompromising examination of ritual and social identity, connecting her work to Ortiz Echagüe while challenging his idealised representation of traditional Spanish culture.
