A haunting devotional icon from the Golden Age of Spanish religious painting.

This emotionally charged oil on canvas painting, measuring 96 × 79 cm including frame, is attributed to the Sevillian Baroque School of the 17th century. Depicting the Virgin of Sorrows (Dolorosa), it presents the Virgin Mary pierced by seven swords, representing the traditional Seven Sorrows of Mary, flanked by a host of cherubic seraphim who emerge from the darkness like mournful witnesses.

Rendered in deep, dramatic tones, the Virgin’s expression is upward and pained, echoing the emotional intensity and theatricality characteristic of Spanish Baroque devotion. The restrained background and minimal setting focus attention on the spiritual gravity of her suffering.
