With photographs by Steve Schapiro it captures the making of one of the darkest icons of American cinema through the eyes of a photographer who was embedded in its genesis. Shot on location in 1975 during the production of Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, Schapiro’s images move between candid documentary and constructed myth — De Niro rehearsing in the mirror, Jodie Foster between takes, the neon grime of a pre-gentrified New York.

This is more than a film book — it’s a time capsule of American paranoia. Schapiro frames not just the actors but the machinery around them: grips, lights, tension. The city becomes a character, and Travis Bickle a symptom. With a foreword by Scorsese and over 400 images, many never before published, the volume shows how an unstable film became a cultural monument. Designed in large format and printed multilingually, Taxi Driver is both a portrait of a film and a study in urban alienation — seen from the back seat of a yellow cab.
